August, Corn and Crickets

Last night we ate freshly picked sweet corn from the field. After dinner, sitting on the porch in the gathering twilight, we heard crickets and were reminded that August happens this week. If peepers are a sure sign of spring, crickets are the opposite bookend of summer and a reminder that summer is starting to wind down. Oddly appropriate that in Vermont the pinnacle of summer produce - sweet corn - comes just as you start seeing signs that summer’s end is upon us.

The corn and crickets made me think of one of my favorite passages in E. B White’s Charlotte’s Web. It’s pictured above - and it speaks for itself. Enjoy the last month of summer!

Our Cookeville Market will be loaded with freshly harvested baby lettuce and kale, chard, broccoli, cabbages, cukes, zucchini,  green onions, beets , new potatoes, tomatoes, sweet red onions and the first CORN of the season.   As always, we will be stocked with our pastured eggs,  grocery staples, local milk, yogurt , ice cream, cheeses, fresh goodies from Marilyn and a freezer full of our very own pastured meats.  We also have more peaches this week!

Open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30am till 6pm and Saturday 8:30 till 3pm.

Freezer Stocking Special - buy 5 or more of our pastured chickens directly from the farm and get a big discount! Pick up day is August 7th after 4pm. Email Margaret for more details.
