Broccolini Dreaming
We hope you all came out ok after all the nasty weather this weekend. We missed seeing you all on Saturday (but we had a lovely day at home in front of the woodstove).
We seeded broccolini this past week - a lot of it. Spent the day thinking about those crisp, sweet, slightly spicy florets and could almost taste them. At the coop on Friday I saw a pile of little broccolini bundles in the produce section and I couldn’t resist. Admittedly, they were a little limp and had traveled all the way from California, but I figured a good cold soak would improve them and I imagined myself devouring them raw - stalk by stalk - the way I do when I walk by the broccolini patch while I am out checking the field or watering seedlings on a summer morning. You are probably guessing how this ends. They were limp, slightly bitter but yet still without flavor. A disappointment similar to eight inches of snow after begin able to get out and prep beds for planting peas. A reminder that the shorter the distance your food travels to reach your table the better it tastes. No exceptions.
Come on down to the market this week to shake off those second winter blues! We will be restocked with carrots, beets, celeriac, sweet potatoes and cabbages, early mesclun mix and a full selection of our pastured meats, treats to tempt us all from Marilyn's Kitchen and a full line up of local cheeses, milk, yogurt and our very own eggs. Spring spinach is full swing - we will have plenty of bags available - what a tonic after a long winter!
